Gambling Addiction Symposium – Current developments: epidemiology, prevention and gambling protection in Austria, Germany and Switzerland

The Federal Ministry of Finance (BMF) introduced a radical change into Austrian gambling law with the Gambling Act Amendment 2010, by which gambling protection and prevention became key pillars for combating gambling addiction. This puts Austria in a pioneering position in the realm of gambling protection compared with the rest of Europe, and this is also reflected in creation of the specialist team for addiction advice and addiction prevention within the BMF.

The first Austria-wide study on the latest epidemiological findings concerning the prevalence of gambling addiction were presented to a selected professional audience within the framework of a symposium held at the BMF. In order to enable a country comparison, the results of the recently-published German epidemiological PAGE study and the Swiss representative survey of the Swiss Federal Gaming Board from 2009 were presented.

A country comparison of gambling-protection and preventive measures in Austria, Germany and Switzerland provided an overview of the topic. In the context of a podium discussion with all speakers, the application and efficacy of successful individual measures taken within particular jurisdictions formed the focus of debate.
