Representing Austria on the Boards of the International Financial Institutions

Austria is represented at the Boards of Governors and Directors of the International Financial Institutions (IFIs) through its membership in various constituencies. These are groups of countries that organise themselves for the purpose of joint representation. By means of rotation agreements, Austrian officials are regularly present at board meeings. Currently, Austria holds a permanent Executive Director position at the EBRD, a rotating Executive Director position at the World Bank, and advisor positions at other regional banks. In addition, officials from the Austrian Ministry of Finance participate at the annual meetings, and regular consultations and dialogue takes place directly between the Ministry and the management and board of the IFIs respectively.

The IFIs play a key role in shaping the conditions under which the global, regional, and national economies operate. In its interaction with the IFIs, Austria follows certain strategic guidelines. In order to influence the shaping of IFI policies and strategies, the Austrian representatives join forces with like-minded countries within and beyond our constituencies, in particular through the mechanisms of extended EU coordination (EU Plus).

Our representatives work with embassies, trade delegates as well as the Austrian Development Agency, in order to foster cooperation between IFI programs on the one hand, and the work of Austrian academics and experts as well as private sector actors on the other. This significantly contributes to Austria’s visibility and our efforts to build a more eminent international profile.
