Testing and marking of precious metal articles

Every precious metal article manufactured or offered for sale in Austria has to bear a fineness mark and a registered responsibility mark.

The fineness mark indicates the fineness of the alloy and the responsibility mark allows to identify the manufacturer or trader responsible for testing and marking of the article.

The responsibility for controlling compliance with the provisions of the Austrian Marking Act rests with the Ministry of Finance.

For this purpose inspection officers carry out spot checks on companies, workshops and sales locations and draw random samples of precious metal articles for testing.
