When entering Austria from EU Member States, the previously accustomed permanent customs checks are over. It is only occasionally that you have to expect these checks at the border or when traveling through Austria.

A new feature is that you may import your purchases, made in the enlarged EU, without having to pay any charges or customs duties. As has been the case so far with imports from Germany or Italy, you are able – as of that date - to bring any of your personal belongings or articles of use to Austria, without having to pay customs duties or other charges in Austria.

Please mind the following regulations when importing tobacco products from neighboring countries: When coming to Austria by car or ship, the ceiling of 25 cigarettes continues to apply. Limited quantities also apply when importing tobacco products from Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, or when you arrive by plane from one of the adjoining new states. Please pay special attention to these regulations, so that you will be able to enter Austria without any problems. Please be aware that you will continue to need a passport when traveling to EU Member States.
