When entering Austria from EU Member States, the previously accustomed permanent customs checks are over. It is only occasionally that you have to expect these checks at the border or when travelling through Austria.

A new feature is that you may import your purchases, made in the enlarged EU, without having to pay any charges or customs duties. As has been the case so far with imports from Germany or Italy, you are able – as of that date - to bring any of your personal belongings or articles of use to Austria, without having to pay customs duties or other charges in Austria.

Please be aware that you will continue to need a passport when travelling to EU Member States.
