What needs to be done at the border customs office?
- You must hand in an oral customs declaration. For means of transport you have to hand in a written customs declaration (see below advance basic assessment notice). When you bring personal property with you for import, the goods must be declared for customs clearance at the border customs office.
- You must apply for an exemption from taxes and duties for your relocation goods. This can be done either by adding an informal written note to the customs declaration or by entering a statement to this effect under item 44 of the Single Administrative Customs Document which should read “Exemption from taxes and duties for relocation goods”.
The customs authorities then check whether you meet the requirements for relief from import taxes and duties. If you can show the required supporting documents, and if the customs authority is in a position to get an overview of the goods that you brought along with you (it is recommended to carry a goods list), the exemption from taxes and duties is granted during customs clearance at the border.
