Action Day - Restaurant Industry

Pizza delivery services and kebab sellers are the focus of the Ministry of Finance

In a regional target operation from 22 June to 1 July 2010, 141 inspection officers of the tax offices have checked 419 restaurant industry businesses in Styria and Carinthia operating in the pizza delivery and kebab selling sector for completeness of their business records and for employment of clandestine or illegal workers.

Of the 403 employees who were checked, 33 Austrian residents had not been registered for tax and of these, 6 of them had been registered as unemployed with the AMS Labour Market Service. In addition, 17 illegal aliens were arrested by the inspection officers of the tax offices and there were subsequently 48 criminal complaints due to the failure to register for social insurance.

Approx. 65% of the audited business records were found to be unacceptable because the electronic cash register systems/computer systems found by the Ministry auditors revealed serious defects. In the course of the checks, the tax recovery teams collected outstanding taxes totalling just under EUR 229,000 on the spot in cash, and carried out in rem attachments valued at approx. EUR 19,000 and imposed tax claim attachments in the amount of EUR 22,000.

During these focused operations at restaurant industry businesses, the control officers of KIAB (the Austrian Authority for the Control of Illegal Employment) noticed a nearby construction site near the site of their tax inspection, which they spontaneously decided to audit as well. The result of that audit: a Serbian citizen who was working illegally, who was subsequently remanded to the Aliens Authority .
